 Purpose:
Since 1957, more than 4000 space launches have led to a current population of approximately 8500 trackable objects (larger than 10 cm) in near-Earth space. Only about 600 or 700 of them are operational spacecraft. The remainder is space debris, i.e. objects that no longer serve any useful purpose. It is expected there are a greater number of objects in orbit which cannot be operationally tracked; possibly 100,000 to 150,000 or more objects larger than 1 cm.
The purpose of the Third European Conference on Space Debris is to provide a forum for the presentation of results from research on space debris, to assist in defining future directions for research, to identify methods of debris control, reduction and protection, and to discuss international implications and policy issues. The Conference will also promote technical understanding and support the discussions that are ongoing at a worldwide level, e.g. at the Scientific and Technical Subcommittee of UNCOPUOS. Preliminary Programme: The Conference will be divided into sessions and will include both invited and contributed papers, with posters if needed. The programme will conclude with a round table discussion.Monday, March 19 Session 1: Measurements of Space Debris and Meteoroids Session 2: Modelling of the Space Debris and Meteoroid Environment
Tuesday, March 20 Session 3: Material Returned from Space and Space Experiments Session 4: Hypervelocity Impacts and Shielding
Wednesday, March 21 Session 5: Risk Analysis, and Protective and Preventative Measures Session 6: Space-Debris Mitigation and Policy Issues
